The history of Nānākuli Stream
As most people know the westside region of O'ahu is well known for being dry and barren. Coming from someone that grew up here, I can fully say that thatʻs true. Itʻs hard to believe that back then there used to be a flowing healthy stream that ran through Nanakuli. The bottom of the stream is a estuary, when the stream water and the ocean water meet. Also known as the creation of brackish water. Back in the days my home was known for having brackish water, which is why Nanakuli is named the way it is. Nana meaning "to look", and kuli meaning "knee". My puna told me that when visitors would come they would always ask for fresh water to drink after their long travels. But the people of Nanakuli knew that what they had, the brackish water, wasnʻt good enough for them. So the people would look to their knees in shame.
